Research findings, 'HPLC analysis of oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol in stems and roots of Olea europaea L. cv. Picual during ripening,' are discussed in a new report. According to a study from Jaen, Spain, "Oleuropein (Ole), hydroxytyrosol (Htyr), and tyrosol (Tyr) are three of the main phenolic compounds present in the olive tree (Olea europaea L.) that have important antioxidant properties. To investigate the role of these phenolic compounds in the metabolism of stems and roots of Olea europaea L. cv."

THE legality of the arrest of mayor and DA leader Helen Zille depends on facts which may be in dispute, says the Centre for Constitutional Rights of the FW de Klerk Foundation.

"Arrest constitutes one of the most drastic infringements of an individual's rights and until the basis of the arrest is formulated, police should be hesitant to resort to this," Nikki de Havilland, deputy director of the centre, said.

Zille and 10 others were arrested on Sunday after an anti-drug march by members of the Peoples Anti-Drug and Liquor Action Committee (Padlac) in Mitchells Plain.

Taiwan is a seismically jittery place, and researchers said the earthquake that rocked the island early Tuesday is not related to the recent ones in Greece and Turkey.

Taiwan, which sits on the edge of two plates on the Earth's crust, the Eurasian and the Philippine plates, gets shaken by dozens of quakes each year.

Most are centered in the Pacific Ocean east of the island and rarely cause damage. The magnitude 7.6 quake that hit Taiwan early Tuesday was very unusual because it occurred beneath the island's central mountains.

In the December issue of the journal Conservation Biology, professors Tim Caro, John Eadie and Andrew Sih examine the common research practice of using surrogate animals to predict or identify what is endangering another species. Texans get first win

The Houston Texans learned last week that they have to play to the very end. On Sunday that lesson paid off.

Matt Schaub threw interceptions on Houston's first two possessions, but ran for a 3-yard touchdown with 3 seconds left, leading the Texans to a 29-28 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

The Dolphins (2-3) had knocked down consecutive passes in the end zone before Schaub ran for the score. The 2-point conversion failed, but Houston had enough points.

That drive was kept alive when Andre Johnson caught a 23-yard pass on fourth-and-10.
