A Supreme Court ruling this week was a reminder that neither the passage of time nor the accumulation of precedent has been able to heal a decades-old fault line within the court.

On one side of the line are the justices who accept the essential premises behind the landmark decisions of the 1960s that protected the rights of criminal defendants. Those justices prevailed on Monday in ruling that prosecutors may not eliminate potential jurors on the basis of race.
