BREAKFAST ROUND-UP: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 0430.

KENO (SYDNEY)

Concern over the impact of gambling on the community has prompted New South Wales Premier
BOB CARR to veto a new Keno-style numbers game in pubs.

The Sun-Herald newspaper says the TAB-run game, with jackpot prizes worth $2 million, was
due to be operating in 2,000 hotels by the end of this year.

But Mr CARR has expressed concerns to his cabinet about the impact of gambling on poor
families.

This follows last month's Productivity Commission report which showed NSW was the leading
gambling state in Australia.

PAEDOPHILES (SYDNEY)

Six mothers claim up to 30 children have been ritually abused by a network of paedophiles
and satanists.

The Sun-Herald newspaper says the Police Integrity Commission is investigating allegations
that paedophiles have been protected by police and officials entrusted to care for the
children.

The newspaper says police have found evidence linking central coast satanic ritual sites to
drawings made by children who claim they were abused.

The report says one traumatised child tells of adult groups hanging him from a cross,
killing animals, performing sexual acts on cult members and watching orgies.

DESTROYER (SYDNEY)

The Navy's guided missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane is to return to a major maritime defence
exercise off the coast of Darwin after a fire on board the vessel yesterday.

The ship's commander has praised his sailors' courage in tackling the fire in a gun turret,
saying the situation was potentially extremely dangerous.

Captain PETER LESCHEN says the fire flared when a cartridge split as gunners fired during
anti-aircraft gunnery practice.

While the fire was quickly extinguished, smoke filled the ship and five crew had to be
treated for minor smoke inhalation.

CAMERAS (ADELAIDE)

A former High Court chief justice has championed the televising of court cases to help
educate the public about Australia's judicial system.

Sir ANTHONY MASON says television programs showing court proceedings would encourage
interest in the legal system.

BIKIES (ADELAIDE)

The South Australian opposition has called for National Crime Authority action to prevent a
spate of bikie gang wars across Australia.

Opposition leader MIKE RANN says he received reports from the US and New Zealand in 1996
indicating bikie gangs were establishing headquarters in Australia.

He says the reports were given to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, the National Crime Authority
and South Australian police.

TOPLESS COP (SYDNEY)

A glamorous Sydney police officer who posed naked for a national men's magazine has sparked
disapproval but not reprimand from her superiors.

The Sunday Telegraph says 23-year-old Constable ROBYN CHARLESWORTH appeared in the
September issue of RALPH magazine after gaining permission to hold a second job.

But a police source reportedly says permission didn't cover nude shots.

Senior police have launched an investigation.

SUBMARINE (SYDNEY)

One of the Royal Australian Navy's new submarines almost capsized as it rolled in heavy
seas at the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

The Sun-Herald newspaper quotes navy sources saying that during sea trials in 1996, HMAS
Collins rolled to 60 degrees off vertical, only 10 degrees from the critical point where it
couldn't recover.

The newspaper says the navy has since kept silent about the incident, which stemmed from
anchor problems.

TANKER (SYDNEY)

Port authorities say they've isolated the clean-up of Sydney Harbour's worst ever oil spill
to one area.

The Sydney Ports Corporation and Waterways Authority says the main oil deposits are now
isolated near Balls Head Bay.

An Italian tanker leaked 80,000 litres of oil into Australia's most famous waterway on
Tuesday night, creating a 10km oil slick in the harbour.

POLL VIC (MELBOURNE)

October 2 is firming as Victoria's election date.

But Coalition MPs have been told to be ready in case Premier JEFF KENNETT visits the state
governor in nine days time to call a September poll.

The Sunday Age quotes a senior cabinet source saying the most likely date is October 2 -
the Saturday after the AFL grand final.

TIMOR POLL (DILI, East Timor)

A UN official says close to 450,000 people have registered to take part in the landmark
vote on East Timor's future on August 30.

The chief electoral officer of the UN Mission in East Timor JEFF FISCHER says preliminary
figures show that 433,500 individuals registered within East Timor and 12,600 outside.

Meanwhile, the UN says its mission in East Timor may be evacuated if security conditions
deteriorate.

But Indonesian Foreign Minister ALI ALATAS says Indonesia can keep the peace, and is
committed to a peaceful solution.

NET CASINO (BRISBANE)

The Queensland Labor MP at the centre of the internet gaming scandal has just over a week
to pull out of a taxpayer-funded tour of the Caribbean and resign as Deputy Speaker or face
the prospect of being sacked by his leader.

Premier PETER BEATTIE yesterday re-issued the ultimatum to Woodridge MP BILL D'ARCY to
resign his parliamentary posts before a government caucus meeting on August 16.

The Criminal Justice Commission is poised to begin investigations into Mr D'ARCY'S
involvement with the company that won Queensland's first internet casino licence.

Meanwhile, Mr D'ARCY'S wife LOIS has reportedly been sacked as a director of a company at
the centre of the Net Bet scandal.

IN SPORTING NEWS:

AFL KANGAROOS (SYDNEY)

The Kangaroos have held out a fast-finishing Sydney for a 10 point win in their AFL match
at the SCG.

The Swans hit the lead for the first time midway through the final quarter but two late
goals to BRETT ALLISON and COREY MCKERNAN took the Kangaroos to a 17.9 (111) to 15.11 (101)
victory.

Meanwhile, Carlton has virtually sealed an AFL finals berth with a 69 point thumping of
Fremantle at the WACA Ground.

The Blues led at every change and gained a valuable percentage boost with the 19.12 (126)
to 8.9 (57) win, their 11th of the season and third in succession.

And Richmond's AFL finals hopes have been obliterated at the MCG by a 33-point loss to
bottom side Collingwood.

Meanwhile, Geelong has resurrected its faint AFL finals hopes and put Port Adelaide's
September dreams on hold with a 32-point victory.

LEAGUE RAIDERS (CANBERRA)

Canberra backrower JASON CROKER has scored four tries in 25 minutes as the Raiders powered
to an easy 46-16 win over North Sydney in the National Rugby League match at Bruce Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Sharks have poured on the second-half pressure to thrash Western Suburbs
46-0 in their match at Shark Park.

And a sloppy Melbourne Storm has still managed to score six tries in a 30-24 defeat of
North Queensland in their match in Townsville.
